SWEDISH LAPLAND

A well-researched trip is always the safest and most enjoyable way of exploring.

Having traveled the world as a tour manager (for an artist) and worked in an Arctic Adventure Company in Kiruna as main management/booking/customer care, as well as running a little Facebook Group for S
wedish Lapland travels, I've decided to throw the most repetitive and obvious information onto here, hopefully making it easier and more enjoyable to plan your next expedition into the wild.

None of this content is paid or requested advertisement, I'm not making any money with any of this and it's mostly based on personal experience (therefore heavily Kiruna/Abisko-centric) and research.

GETTING THERE

In the Arctic, nature dictates the method and speed of travel. While most of the year the weather is kind, there are periods of intense cold which prevent even the main train and bus companies from operating. Therefore it is advisable to always have a plan B researched.

by Train

Train tickets are usually released 2-3 months in advance. The train being at the mercy of mother nature, you should always have at least engaged with the thought of a plan B in case of total cancellation (without bus replacement) which is very rare (only when it hits -30 degrees celsius or worse) but can happen sometime between new year and mid February.

While trains go to Abisko and further to Narvik, I have focused on Kiruna as the last city in the Swedish North.

Times can vary a little, so below is rough info to give you an idea of whats available.

Stockholm - Kiruna:

Vy Nattåg 94            18:08 - 09:14

Vy Nattåg 92&96     21:55 - 15:12

Stockholm - Abisko:

Vy Nattåg 94            18:08 - 11:09

Vy Nattåg 92&96     21:55 - 16:49

Lulea - Kiruna:

Vy Nattåg 3964        05:13 - 09:14

Vy Norrtåg 7150       06:19 - 09:52

Vy Nattåg 96            10:42 - 15:12

Vy Norrtåg 7152       11:10 - 15:00

Vy Norrtåg 7154       16:29 - 20:22

by Car

If you plan to drive north with your own vehicle - car or camper, you need to be aware of the following winter tyre rules which apply between December 1st and March 31st (or before and after as well, based on weather/season).

Be aware than not all roads get cleaned in winter, and there are reindeer frequently crossing the roads.

Rental cars come with studded tires in winter and are available at all the generic rental cr companies. Be aware that due to the remoteness and size of towns in the north, numbers are quite limited. thus purchasing as far in advance a possible is very advisable!

by Bus

You can technically get from any European Flixbus station all the way to Umea, though thats their northernmost location.
